Red Sox relief pitchers 7th and 8th inning splits through August 24th

Much has been made of the Red Sox bullpen woes in the 7th and 8th inning.

Does John Farrell mishandled the relief pitchers or are the players under performing?

I would argue that it is both.

Farrell has made some statistically curious in game moves. Are these moves made because Farrell is flawed or because he has no faith in anybody he has put out there?

We will never know.

Here are the numbers for the Red Sox relief pitching in the 8th inning. 4.47 ERA, 1.48 WHIP aren't exactly shut down numbers.

Sorted by highest ERA.

AL pitching splits since the All-Star break

As the Red Sox march down the stretch of the last 25% or so of the 2016 season, let's take a look how the American League teams pitching staffs have done since the All-Star break.

You might be surprised that Tampa Bay is 1st in overall ERA, 1sr in starting pitching ERA and 3rd in bullpen ERA since the All-Star break.

Also, notice how only 7.5 games separates the team with the best record, Seattle (21-13), from the worst Chicago (14-21).

First let's look at the entire pitching staffs in the AL since the All-Star break. Red Sox are 4th in ERA, 7th in WHIP, 6th in BA against and 2nd in OPS against.

League averages for this time period are 4.06 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, .252 BA against and .731 OPS against.

Red Sox bullpen pitching woes since the All-Star break

What is going on with the Boston Red Sox bullpen? To be honest. Nothing. They just aren't good enough.

Let's take a look at the American League pitching numbers since the All-Star game.

First we parse out the relief pitchers in the AL.

Red Sox are 13th in team ERA and 14th in WHIP. To make matters worse, the Sox have the least worked bullpen in the AL since the All-Star game. A measly 82 1/3 innings pitched.

The Red Sox relief pitchers should be better rested than any team in the league. And they are still horrible.

Sorted by ERA.
League avg ERA (3.63), WHIP (1.24).
