Red Sox record was down to 6 games over .500 (43-37).
The pitching staff's cumulative season ERA was 4.58.
Red Sox didn't have a reliable or effective 4th or 5th starter.
It turns out that game might have been the impetus to get this team and the pitching staff working properly. Five of the 16 players in that fateful July 2nd game have since been either traded or demoted (Light, Vazquez, Hernandez, LaMarre, Hembree) and the starting pitcher is now a reliever (Buchholz).
So how has Boston's pitching been since then compared to the rest of the America League?
First in wins, fewest HR's allowed, 6th in ERA and WHIP. Not bad and certainly trending in the right direction.
